Hello tj.

Question for you:  Do you have installed a 3rd-party firewall ?

If so, try turning off that firewall, and turn ON the Windows firewall instead.

If you have 3rd-party antivirus / security software, turn those off.

See this MS article
Windows Update or Microsoft Update repeatedly offers the same update
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910339

Then try Windows Update one more time.

IF you still have a exception failure, make sure to provide details.

Let's have you use NOTEPAD & do some research in the Windows Update log (using Notepad)
usually at C:\Windows\Windowsupdate.log  or C:\WINNT\Windowsupdate.log

Copy and Paste here the last 70 lines out of that log, for review.
Go to near end of the log for latest entries and look for error notations.
You can use CTRL+END keyboard keys to get to the end of the file. Then get the last 70 lines & copy & paste here, in reply

See Microsoft KnowledgeBase article
KB 902093 How to read the Windowsupdate.log file
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902093

Next,

Download this zip file from here  http://sdrv.ms/Kp1lc3   so we can get a report.

Save the zip file to a unique folder.

Extract the contents. Then double-click the vbs file to start it.

You will get a Notepad report named UpdateHistory.txt  located in your %temp%  (temporary file folder).

The topmost entries  (at the top of the file) are the most recent update items.

Copy the topmost 2 pages and then paste into your reply here.

I disabled my 3rd party antivirus & firewall etc and re-enabled Windows Firewall, then tried installing the updates as directed. As usual, they installed fine, I restarted my computer, the update log says they installed successfully but yet Windows Update is still asking me to install the same two patches.

The second part of your response won't help because the updates install perfectly every time - there is no exception failure, no warning or error of any kind, and so no log to send to you.

I look forward to your next suggestion.

Thanks,

Toby

Toby, I am experiencing the exact same issue!! And, for files KB2656351 and KB2600217. I have been following the directions given by others by Microsoft folks with negative success. In Configsys I disabled background programs, ran their fix tool, scans, etc. I will keep following this because it appears were in the same boat of ****. I'm sure as **** not uninstalling .Net and reinstalling as some suggest because I know that it will be nothing but trouble after that. Watch the applications crash!! Andrew

@Lisa F

Please be explicit and state your version of Windows, in your next reply.

Allegedly the update was completed twice, but I suspect that not all "bits" got properly totally completed.

Do the following so that you are notified only & not auto-updated.

That way you can select what to accept.

Control Panel >> Action Center
Under the Security block
click the button Change settings...
In the next popup window, click line Let me choose
Click on down arrow-list and select Never check
When all done, click OK to apply changes.

Then logoff and Restart the system. Windows-key+I and Power and Restart

Then when freshly started, go back to Action Center, back to Windows Update settings
In the block "Important updates" .... I'd suggest choosing
Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them

Also, go to Control Panel >> all Control Panel items >> Windows Update >> View Installed Updates

then see if KB2656351 and KB2600217  in Installed Updates

Maurice, I really appreciate the help with this frustrating issue.  I am running Win 7 Home Premium - 64 bit.  I have Windows Update always set at allowing me to manually choose what updates to install.  I have tried installing both files individually and still keep receiving the prompt to update my PC again. Upon reviewing my update history, there are approx 15 installations of these 2 files and each states that they were successful.

Question for you:  Prior to your attempting to "install the files individually", Did you first Uninstall them thru Control Panel , & restarting system & then installing 1 at a time?

I apologize for the delay in my response.  I travel often on business.  I tried uninstalling the updates as suggested and re-installed individually with negative success.
